A syllable is a sound. A stressed syllable is the part of the word that is longer and stronger. CVC = Consonant Vowel Consonant.

1. When a one syllable word ends in cvc, double the last consonant
hop hug pat show
tap snow rob dare
cram rain dot bat
2. If a two syllable or more word ends in cvc, but the stress is on the first syllable, don’t double the last letter.
offer prefer open visit
begin permit travel select
demand listen vanish control
3. When a word has a silent final e, drop the e before adding - ing.
hope rage have tape
live make write dare
hide take dine become
4. Verbs ending in y
If the verb ends in a vowel + y add ed Add ing
If the verb ends in a consonant + y Change y to I and add ed Add ing
study Enjoy destroy worry
try reply bury pray
employ marry hurry carry
